What is in a Name?

What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;

Romeo and Juliet, William Shakesphere

I’ve always been vain about my name. The response and what I think it says about me are things that I have always appreciated having been gifted my name from my parents.

At a very young age I got used to correcting my teachers as they would attempt to shorten my name to “Molly” to politely responding with “Molly Jo please!”  It is inevitable when one has a double name that people go out of their way to shorten it.  It could be by just calling me “Molly” or trying to find a nickname like the unclever one like “Molly McButter.”  There definitely have been some more creative ones as well like “MoJo,” “Jolly Mo,” “MJ”, and “Moya hoe” (hispanic pronounciation).  I think they miss the point.  I like it unmolested.  I like when people meet me they have a higher chance of remembering my name.  I like that I’m always asked “Are you from the South?” and after getting a negatory I am inquired “Do you have any family from the South?”

What (I Fancy) My Name Says about me

I really like the name “Molly,” to me it is the name of a lady, kind, and humble.  “Molly” is a derivative of “Mary.”  “Jo” describes a very different person.  To me “Jo” is Little Women, feisty, brave, bold while still trying to appear like a lady.

I feel that I am both of these and neither.  I aspire to both but end up oscillating between the two.  What can I say, I like my name.
